Two FCBStudios Projects Named Civic Trust Awards Finalists
5th December 2024
Two FCBStudios projects—Rotherhithe Primary School and Brighton Dome Corn Exchange & Studio Theatre—have been named Regional Finalists in the Civic Trust Awards 2025. This recognition highlights their vital role in enriching communities through outstanding design, sustainability, and heritage preservation.
Rotherhithe Primary School’s redevelopment transforms it into a modern, inclusive community hub. Embracing the concept of a "school within a garden," it extends the green space and openness of Southwark Park into the school grounds, creating a stimulating and protected outdoor environment for students, many from high-rise homes without gardens. The design prioritises inclusivity, with spaces for children with special needs, and fosters community connections through flexible facilities for arts, sports, and workshops. Celebrating local heritage and prioritising sustainability with energy-efficient systems and green features, the school is a beacon of hope and pride for its vibrant, diverse neighbourhood.
The Brighton Dome Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre refurbishment has redefined their role in community life and cultural enrichment, transforming these historic venues into vibrant, accessible, and sustainable cultural spaces. Situated in Brighton’s Regency gardens, these Grade I and II listed buildings now seamlessly blend heritage conservation with modern functionality. The Corn Exchange’s restoration highlights its architectural significance, while upgrades to both venues, including new foyers and creative spaces, foster accessibility and inclusivity. The spaces host diverse performances, workshops, and community events, engaging local groups and broadening audience reach. The project not only preserves Brighton’s cultural heritage but also strengthens its status as a thriving creative and social landmark.
Both projects will now compete for National Awards or Highly Commended status, with winners to be revealed in January 2025 and celebrated at the Civic Trust Awards Ceremony in March.
