Born in Amsterdam and raised in Porto, Ernst joined our Manchester Studio in 2016 with a specialism in leading complex mixed-use projects.
Over 20 years in practice in the UK, these include a range of award-winning schemes such as Beetham Tower, HOME Arts Centre, the University of Manchester’s £300m Engineering Campus, The Antwerp Philharmonic Concert Hall and Circle Square Vita Living, developing specialisms in cultural, residential, masterplan and regenerative high street typologies.
Ernst is passionate about retrofit as a means to reducing embodied carbon whilst enriching historical character and social capital. To this end, he is spearheading place-led, town centre regeneration schemes in Stretford, the Trafford Civic Quarter and Chorlton Precinct.
Ernst completed a self-build home to Passivhaus principles in 2021 and sits on the Places Matter! design review panel for the northwest. He is a visiting critic at the Universities of Liverpool and Manchester.
