Middleport Pottery marked the completion of its £9m refurbishment yesterday with an opening celebration hosted by HRH Prince Charles. The pottery, which dates back to 1888, is the last working pottery in UK and has undergone a three-year project funded by the Prince’s Regeneration Trust.
Overseen by the Creative Re-use team at FCBStudios the project aims to revive not just the home of the famous Burleigh range but also the surrounding area of Stoke on Trent. Whilst 80 people currently work at the pottery a further 30 jobs are expected to be created over the next year. The project has also equipped to pottery with facilities to enable thousands of visitors to understand and enjoy its unique story.
Studio Leader Geoff Rich said “This project is about more than saving a building and we’re very proud to have been involved. It’s helped to restore a sense of pride and optimism locally and will help thousands of people to learn about its ongoing craft tradition”.
Middleport opens to the public on 1st July.
