FCBStudios to transform historic prisons into unique housing

FCBStudios have been appointed by City & Country to transform two listed former prisons in Gloucester and Portsmouth. The sites will be transformed into unique dwellings, turning these remarkable institutional buildings into desirable and exciting new places to live.

The mixed-use schemes will provide a range of housing types as well as additional uses within the retained buildings and external landscape design.

Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) Gloucester comprises a number of Victorian prison buildings, listed Grade II and II* and offers a unique location within the city centre of Gloucester, sitting adjacent to the Quay and historic Docks, whilst the Grade II listed HMP Kingston in Portsmouth is a key example of the prototypical ‘panoptican’ radial prison layout that were constructed in the late 19th Century.

Public consultations are currently taking place with planning applications due later in the year; both developments are expected to be on site by the end of 2016.
