Bedales School Art and Design Building picks up four RIBA Awards

The Art and Design facility for Bedales School, Petersfield, had a successful night at Ascot Racecourse winning four RIBA Awards.

The school is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the edge of the South Downs National Park in the village of Street near Petersfield. Consequently the planning process required a design of sensitivity and scale that was appropriate to the special location. The new Art & Design building is constructed around a substantial and beautiful oak tree using simple materials in their natural state throughout. It sits alongside a range of old barns in which ‘outdoor work’ is taught and students bake bread each week.

The judges said, ‘Playful use of light through layering of lattice screens to façade and external covered areas offers a joyful and varied experience for users and visitors alike. It is a piece of intelligent client commissioning and a great design response’.

Alongside winning an RIBA South Award and South Sustainability Award, partner Tom Jarman won South Project Architect of the Year 2017 and Bedales School won South Client of the Year.

The project will now go on to the RIBA National Awards which are given to buildings across the UK recognised as having made significant contributions to architecture.
