Exhibition: Making More of Modernism

Modernism was a hugely influential movement which continues to impact our world today. But the ideas grew from a very different global context than the one we live in today. So how can the tenets of modernism be relevant now and, more specifically, what are we preserving when we refurbish and renew modernist buildings? What challenges do designers face in turning these buildings into 'modern' useful buildings?

The exhibition introduces three important schemes:

The ambitious refurbishment of London’s Southbank Centre revitalises the existing buildings to support the Southbank Centre’s mission of hosting world-class art and culture for more people more of the time.

The refurbishment and extension of the Richmond Building for the University of Bristol exemplifies the adaptation of a significant Modern building to form a new and popular centre for University life.

The transformation of a purpose-built 10-storey modernist laboratory tower, at the University of Edinburgh's School of Biological Sciences, to once again provide state of the art research facilities.

Each scheme provides an invaluable lens through which to explore the environmental, technical and philosophical challenges in Making More of Modernism for the 21st century.

The Making More of Modernism Exhibition is part of the London Festival of Architecture 2017.
