Think Time: Rewalking: Peter Smithson’s Walks Within The WallsThink Time: Rewalking: Peter Smithson’s Walks Within The Walls
In the third of our Think Time events we will consider Peter Smithson’s ‘Walks within the Walls’, and be joined by architect Vicky Smith and Peter’s daughter Soraya Smithson.
Alison and Peter Smithson were among the most influential and controversial architects of the mid twentieth century. “Bath - Walks within the Walls” was written in 1966 when Bath was facing huge changes and Peter was concerned that the fragile substance of the city, and its unique character and cohesion, would be lost to the bulldozer.
Vicky Smith trained as an architect in Cambridge and runs a digital media company specialising in architectural walks around towns and cities. She was taught by Peter Smithson, and edited the Walks document when it was republished in 1980. Vicky will introduce Peter’s walks, giving a flavour of their content. Peter Clegg will then chair a discussion on their relevance and potential future plans for reissuing them.
