Plans for a £5.5 million pioneering Spanish and Hispanic art, culture and research institute to be created in Bishop Auckland, County Durham have been revealed.
The project will bring the internationally important Spanish art collection of the Auckland Castle Trust to the town centre.
A disused school building and bank will be converted into a three-storey gallery, visitor centre and institute. The new gallery will host a permanent collection of ‘Golden Age’ works by El Greco, Ribera, Velázquez and Zurbaràn, among art from the Medieval period to the late 20th century.
The plans are part of a wider programme of expansion and investment in the trust’s estate and our designs will accommodate the long-term use and development of the new institute, while remaining sensitive to the history and role of the buildings within the community.
The gallery is scheduled to open in Summer 2018.
