FCBS CARBON is our whole-life carbon review tool, designed to estimate the whole-life carbon of a building to inform design decisions prior to detailed design. Our transition to a net zero architecture is underway. All our designs seek to reduce the embodied and operational carbon impacts of the places we design, but also consider the wider biodiversity, resource and lifestyle impacts of our work. You can read our Carbon Reduction Plan here.
However, we can’t do this alone. We engage with our clients, our industry peers and communities along the journey, learning and sharing our knowledge to help reach our shared sustainability goals.

Reusing existing buildings is one of the most powerful tools architects have in tackling the climate emergency. But along with embodied carbon, these buildings also have historical character and social and economic capital. They have stories to tell. For us, conservation and design are inseparable. The re-use of buildings is an integral part of creating sustainable architecture.

Every decision we make has an impact. We use a number of frameworks and tools to inform our decisions, from One Planet Living for a holistic view of sustainability, to FCBS Carbon for embodied carbon, and post-occupancy evaluation and soft landings to ensure our buildings work as we intended them to.

To reduce carbon emissions, our industry needs to change the way it designs and builds. We work across disciplines, collaborating with research and campaigning groups to advocate regenerative design practices and apply our knowledge to our work. We create exhibitions to share our knowledge and participate in industry events.
We aim to ask the right questions to enable discussion to take place, raise awareness and share knowledge across the industry to meet this shift.

The wellbeing of the people who live, work, play or learn in the buildings that we create is always at the heart of our designs. We design buildings which support and promote active, social and sustainable lifestyles. Buildings which protect biodiversity and increase connectivity with nature.  And we create spaces which inspire a feeling of ownership and leave a lasting positive legacy.

From the outset our design processes include thoughtful, creative and meaningful engagement opportunities for the local communities in which we work. We collaborate with established local organisations, schools, charities and community groups to reach as wide an audience as possible. We promote local skills and employment and support the growth of regional business. And we volunteer our time and share our knowledge and experience.

Whether we are visiting local primary schools, mentoring young adults at college or teaching at universities, we actively seek out engagement opportunities with young people.  We recognise there is a continuing and urgent need to increase diversity in the built environment profession and look to remove barriers and raise aspirations through our work with young people across the board.

We can only improve as an industry if we work as a collective. We share our research outputs, experience and learnings with our peers and actively engage with campaigning groups and organisations to advocate for better design practices. We welcome audiences into our studios so we can share, learn and move forward together.

Our charity group collaborates on creative, architectural and educational projects in the UK and we support charities that promote equality, social justice and education. In 2005 we set up the Feilden Foundation in memory of Richard Feilden. Partnering with schools and organisations in East Africa, the Foundation has provided the design and build of quality educational facilities. In recent years the charity has made a shift into a more advisory role addressing a need to aid and equip the new generation of architects and designers in the region.
